Collection: Rootstocks
In order to create a copy of a given variety a cutting or bud from one year old wood is generally grafted on to a rootstock. In days gone by the rootstocks would have been Malus sylvestris or Crab Apple although today there is an industry developing new rootstock forms that are appropriate for a full range of circumstances. At its most basic a rootstock will determine the eventual height of the tree. We offer 4 different apple rootstocks.
Geneva 202 similiar to M26 (slightly larger) with the added benefit of resistances to Fire Blight, Root rot and most importantly a great resistance to Woolly Apple Aphid. Reported to have some resistance to replant disease.
Geneva 210 - considered ideal for organic production. Precocious and productive with a yield similar or better than M9. Resistant to replant disease, woolly aphid, fire blight and crown rot.
Geneva 214 similar in size to M26 and resistant to fire blight (Erwinia amylovora); Woolly Apple Aphids, replant disease and root rot (Phytophthora). Geneva 214 is also winter hardy.
MM106 is a semi-vigorous rootstock that can be recommended for use over a wide range of soils and climatic conditions for planting densities of approximately 200-250 trees per acre. This is the most common old school rootstock sold by nurseries.
M9 and M26 are magnets for woolly aphid. Nowadays, we wont sell them.
